Hey,

First, a huge thank you. Without any formal launch, Capital Quill already counts 100+ followers, thanks to just a couple of initial posts where I was testing the water (umm, I mean this Substack stuff).

Your early curiosity and encouragement mean a lot. Today marks the official unveiling of the newsletter, and my company – Capital Quill. I want to introduce myself, share the journey so far, and outline what you can expect every Saturday at 10am.

What Capital Quill Is All About

I hated writing in school. I usually failed in the English Language subject. I have always been good at Maths and numbers, but I dreaded English. I don’t know what happened in 2007 (while I was in my 3rd year of engineering) that I starting fondly writing blogs on blogspot, in both English and Hindi, both fiction and non-fiction.

Another remarkable thing happened in 2009, when I first taught a bunch of classmates “Optimization Techniques” for the exam. And I noticed – “I so love explaining things to people”.

Gradually, I honed both my skills (unknowingly) and realized I am a good teacher.

I have specialized in Finance – doing MBA from IIM Indore in Finance, CFA program, CMT program and what not.

I have been an Investment Banker, a Private Wealth Manager, a Strategic Sales and Parternship Head in a Fintech start up and finally a Content, Education and Growth Head at a discount broker.

Which is where I took a career break and now launched Capital Quill.

Through Capital Quill, I am focusing on providing consulting services to financial services firms in the fields I have gained experience in.

I also focus on creating insightful and rich content and teaching finance subjcts offline as well as online.

My Story (& Why “F.I.R.E.” Means Something Different to Me)

Over the last 6 months, my life took an unexpected turn. At 37, I stepped away from a stable corporate career, not because I’d “made it” or amassed a giant retirement stash (as many presumed), but because I yearned for space.

Space to spend time with my newborn. Space to reflect, travel, and rediscover my curiosity. Many assumed I’d achieved FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early). But in reality, I was simply on a carefully planned break.

FIRE is trending. My version? “Freedom to Work, Not Freedom from Work.”

I didn’t retire. I paused. The break was mapped out. 6 months of covered living expenses, plus a buffer. I moved money to fixed income, pared down expenses, covered one-off costs (like insurance), and even budgeted a couple of trips with the baby.

But soon the itch returned: I missed meaningful work. Six months in, I found myself hungry to teach, consult, learn new things (especially trading with AI), and create fresh content. I realized – true independence isn’t about escaping work, but being able to choose what (and how) you work on.

Not Just Wealth. “Network Currency.”

People often equate a career break or bold pivot with great riches or perfect preparation. But the real asset I leaned on wasn’t a fat investment account. It was something less quantifiable and more durable: network currency.

For 12+ years across college, corporate life, side hustles, I focused on excellence in my main role and on building relationships rooted in trust and shared expertise. Investing in this “network currency” (sometimes with nothing but helpfulness and reliability) created opportunities and safety nets money alone couldn’t buy.

Financial security is vital. But “who knows you, trusts you, roots for you” is what opens real doors, especially when you’re forging a new chapter.

Why This Newsletter? Why Now?

Because, as I said, I love writing, and after 7+ years of sharing knowledge on LinkedIn, I want to go deeper, not just wider. Capital Quill is where I sharpen my own thinking, share practical lessons, and build a community for those who value real talk about money, markets, and the strange, wild experiments that come from embracing freedom.

Here’s What You Can Expect (Starting Next Week)

  • Crisp market overviews and actionable insights, covering macro and micro events
  • 5 technical charts to keep an eye next week (and why and how I selected them)
  • Educational deep dives on (small or microcap) companies or (sunrise) sectors
  • Personal finance wisdom from real-life experience – One case study a week
  • A small reader quiz & curated reads
  • Always something truly useful, never fluff

If you ever want to reply, debate, or just say hi, hit Reply. This should always be a two-way street. Also, since I am new here and many of you would be writing or reading substack of others, I would love to get suggestions from you (and apologies if initial few editions look a little unstructured)

Closing Remarks: Why “Freedom To Work” Will Always Matter

As AI, my lens is a bit different, but here’s a truth I see: Data shows people who retire early for work-free leisure often experience a dip in happiness and cognitive sharpness after the initial “honeymoon period.” Humans thrive on challenge, contribution, and creative output, not just free time.

And maybe that’s the ultimate lesson for anyone tempted by dreamy FIRE stories: Most fulfillment lies not in pure escape, but in finding new freedoms to pursue work on your own terms.

Thanks for being an early part of this journey. Your feedback will shape Capital Quill from day one. See you every Saturday!
